Guitar Hero Celebrates 20 Years – The Plastic Guitar That United Generations Between Music Generations

Marking 20 years since the legendary game hit the market in North America, offering everyday gamers the means to become rock legends. Not literally, but try telling that anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s four-minute instrumental break in front of an enthusiastic crowd of friends.

Developed by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a guitar-shaped controller to match on-screen cues scrolling down the display synchronized to the music. Each riff corresponded to specific notes, producing the feel of a genuine performance.

The studio had already experimented in the music genre before partnering with RedOctane, which was acquired by the gaming giant in 2006. Collaboratively, they established the groundwork for an unlikely billion-dollar series that had a remarkable impact on numerous of the artists included, introducing decades-old groups to a new generation of younger players.

A former executive, former COO from the developer, remembers the initial financial challenges of licensing the songs – despite the fact initial releases primarily featured rerecorded tracks.

“We reproduced all the music since the dollar figure prohibitive,” he says. “Despite having the publishing rights alone, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was pretty convinced the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, album purchases and radio play were going up, everyone wanted to be in.”

He adds: “One of the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch expressing gratitude for exposing their children to the music they adored. It became a multigenerational thing.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Northern Irish group the Answer had their track in the 2008 release the popular installment. Guitarist the artist recalls how the series revived classic rock back into vogue: “Guitar Hero provided a bigger, younger audience. Generally this had been seen as outdated material, but then once it got included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the band's debut album was still unreleased stateside, so Guitar Hero was a key medium of discovery for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “The roadies had on the song during travel, and some of them knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs and Lasting Influence

Rock’s biggest acts soon capitalised on the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and others featuring in specialized game editions that focused on their music collections and related stories, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. For example, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly earned the group more money compared to their studio albums. It moved more than half a million copies in its first week, and sales of Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era as the industry faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication among its fans. Recently, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat of DragonForce’s the challenging track – a notoriously difficult anthem made popular by Guitar Hero – using a fan-made version, a freeware game with similar mechanics and extensive personalization features. This track is challenging even in expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing a single one of its near 4,000 notes. They claimed it took months of practice of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, imaginary experience. Just as with Call of Duty, that doesn’t mean you should pick up actual weapons and go to war,” says musician Herman Li.

DragonForce had already completed a profitable run when Through the Fire and Flames appeared in the third game, yet he explains it turned them into a household name. “I remember our distributors informing us that our selling albums like crazy,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility from Guitar Hero was so immense that it risked overshadow everything else accomplishments. Recently, the song featured in promotional material for a major film. “Previously I thought otherwise, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “Should you just listen to a single track, it’s totally cool – everyone’s got their own musical journey and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

The Lasting Legacy of a Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, be it for automobiles, apparel or video games, goes further than selling something – it evokes a desire. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what we were trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “That thrill of being a rock star in the spotlight. Since the beginning, the creators felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to make music, and their goal was to leverage innovation to enable everyone to participate”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games came out over a mere half-decade between 2005 and 2010, including spin-offs like DJ Hero, including a turntable controller, and the band-focused game. Subsequently, the publisher’s interest in plastic instruments waned, except for a brief comeback several years later.

Titles like Clone Hero and newer releases have kept the community alive, and there’s set to be a new product from the founders in development. A new studio has entered production on their first music game. The initial creators are both involved as special advisers. Are gamers ready to embrace another game following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed those games could be like Madden allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much new music it could remain perennially popular, thus I remain optimistic. It's entirely possible why it can’t persist for future fans.”
